» About Fleet Prayer Wall
One of the ways in which the church in the town can pray for the town is by constructing a prayer wall. A prayer wall is the name given to a continuous chain of prayer, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in a town or city. A foundational scripture is Isaiah 62: 6 – 7 which says "I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem: they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the Lord take no rest and give him no rest until He establishes Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth." The main elements of the Fleet Prayer Wall are:
- All of the churches in the town are involved
- Each person in the prayer wall takes a specific half hour or hour each week. We also provide for those who cannot commit to a regular time. We currently have 70 people filling 116 of the 336 weekly slots. We provide guidelines on how to pray for an hour to anyone who joins, along with a sheet of prayers from the Bible The focus is an outward one on the town and the church in the town. Jeremiah 29 encourages us to pray for the welfare of our town. This provides a structure for doing so. Ours is built round 7 aspects of town life:
- We produce a prayer bulletin 6 times a year, giving prayer pointers. These are ready for issue at each Churches Together prayer meeting
- We e–mail around urgent items and prayer co-ordinators pass these on to those without e–mail
- Each church has a co–ordinator who recruits people to the prayer wall and provides them with help and encouragement.
- The master chart, showing who is praying when, is held on the website (www.fleetprayerwall.org) and in Living Stones along with a Prayer Resource folder containing more detailed information. If anyone wants to sign up, you can do it online or at Living Stones – the staff there can direct you. Thus, a prayer wall is foundational to the prayer going on for the town. The Prayer Wall was introduced in October 2001. Since then, we have been particularly encouraged by the opening up of Christian clubs in all the junior schools, the answers to prayer reported back by the former Leader of Hart Council and the quality of new ministers God has brought to the town.
